I think that jlw7s are great subs and worth the money.

i totally agree 100% couldnt have said it better.... there hasnt been a "new W7" or a W7v2 just the plain jain w7 no upgrades, or a bigger voice coil versions, or whatever B.S is needed like alot of these other "internet bargin boner" subs.
i disagree.. why can i probably count on 1 hand how many people on here have W7's

JL Audio originally said their pricing on the W7 was due to it being entirely proprietary, tooling costs alot of money. The W7's amazingly linear BL graph, and its outstanding displacement potential made this proprietary tooling, and added cost, palatable.

A decade later JL's price on the W7 has not gotten any lower. Are we to believe their tooling costs have still not been paid off? Obviously they have, but JL feels the demand sustains their price. There is an argument that this represents an over priced product, as lower prices are possible from the manufacturer by now, and the demand would no doubt increase with lower prices. But over all profit for JL may decrease. If this were to happen, it would indicate the price was then too low.

My point? Both side's argument holds some validity. Understanding both side's argument is seeing the larger picture. Try it.

^^^^^ very very very well put i just dont like the fact that the only people bashing are the ones that use the forum sub of the month woofers. And why do people always associate a Jl owners as some highschool kid that spends all his money. when most of the AI, FI, and other internet boner subs are middle aged people.... i like Jl, jDD, RE just like any other company that makes good equipment no matter the price or brand but its just funny how Jl seems to get bashed so much on this forum, not because of poor quality but because of price, if you dont wanna spend the money or cant afford it then stop b*tching and move on to ur other brand. its just funny how there other brand ive heard that are $1000 and up per sub and no one makes or complains about them.. I wonder if internet boner companys made a $1000 sub what would all the followers do......Nothing they would still support it because its not mainstream. so what difference does it make?
Simple. The reason it's bashed is because of price, like you said. The reason behind that is because it is overpriced relatively. No one denies they have great products. But for the price, you can do just as well with other brands.

They keep selling because it's mainstream - resale value is true - not because it is superior to all other products. True, some others can't afford it, so they bash it. No matter. The point is they shouldn't need that much to be able to afford it.

I won't deny a great product - but I won't pay out a grand for one brand new from a store, when other options are readily available. If you are concerned about resale value, however, that is a separate factor to consider.

Actually the MSRP of the W7 increased by $100 late last year due to the cost of materials increasing. I'd link you to the thread in which Manville was detailing the cost increases they had experienced and why they raised the MSRP, but that forum is sadly no longer in existence.

You know they're doing something right when one sub pisses you guys off so much //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

The W7 is a great all around sub. Some will be louder, some might sound better (subjective) but the W7 brings a good balance of the two, with very good build quality to boot. Pricing on used W7's is similar to that of used XXX's and brahmas, in some cases cheaper. MSRP is high yes, but who here pays MSRP for anything?

I'll say this. I'd try out a W6 or W7 if they actually made more coil configurations that worker with my amp. Until then I'll stick with my 9/10 performance, 1/3 price (used) "forum boner Internet sub". That being said, I'ce heard W6 and W7 setups, so I'd be more inclined to try out a Hertz Mille if I had the money...

Now on the other hand count the number of W7's JL has sold over the past 8 years.

And then on that hand count the number of times the W7 has been used, both by companies and on the forums, as the "benchmark" of subwoofer performance. ("W7 Killer", etc).

And then count the number of people on this forum running Fi or the other various forum/internet boners.

I could probably count on one hand the number of people on here who have a Shiva-X which is a good performing, quality yet affordable driver.

So what does all of this prove? Nothing.

How many people on one particular forum or one particular demographic are using a given product means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things. If you don't fit the demographic for a W7, then fine. But that demographic does exist, obviously.

I've yet to figure out why, but people on internet forums seem to think they're "better" or "more intelligent" or "more informed" than the masses. False. There are some on here who fit that description and do extensive testing to find what fits their neeeds best, but for the most part the forum users are sheep playing follow the leader. They get sucked in by the latest hype and feast on the bullshit information that is offered up daily. Then as soon as a different product gets touted by a few members the internet masses get sucked in again and it doesn't take long for the previous boner to become flaccid and everyone for the most part forgets it ever existed. I think part of this may come from the constant turnover of the member base that occurs. Older members move on, younger more vulnerable members join. Regardless......moral of the story is don't use internet forums as a representation of the quality, usefulness or appropriate pricing of a particular product. Forum members overall are not better, more intelligent or more informed than the rest of the demographic. They are both lead by marketing and sales pitches, whether it comes from salesmen and advertising or other forum members and forum boners is irrelevant. It's the same result.

Average used 05' XXX price = $300-350

Average used brahma price = $250-$350

Average used W7 price = $200-$350 depending on size. 12's usually $300-$350, 10's are usually priced $200-$280. I haven't seen many used 13w7's but from what I've seen I'd say $350-$450 used.

I must really **** at math because I don't see the other subs coming in at 1/3rd or 1/2 the price of the w7.

Bought my RL-p for $160 with the box. More of an in between W6-W7 to me. I'd say Soundsplinter isn't as SQ oriented as the Shiva or Brahma, but very good sounding subs either way. And I got my sub from the original owner. The only W7 I'd be interested in is the 8 because it is very impressive for the size. But again 3ohm coils are stupid!

There are plenty of subs out there that are not worth its price. Crap at any price is still paying for a handfull of sh**.

At least with a few companies like JL, you know what your getting. others just license to use various patents from whoever and slap em together in china.

I'm sure some of you have bought subs or know friends that had some that distorted easily, degraded after hard use, blown or cant handle certain levels of bass boost while others can. sometimes paying more is better than taking advice from teens or rummaging through the bargain bin hoping you dont grab a turd

I dont suppose he addressed the tooling point I mentioned did he? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
