The most common cause of what you explained is from reversed polarity. No bass when balanced evenly, but when u balance to one side, the bass returns... Very typical of reversed polarity.
Sure, cold weather can reduce the bass output of a speaker, but once it warms up it should be back to normal. I remember the two 8" 's I had in my truck would not put out much when it was under 10 degrees or so, but once they warmed up it was all good.
If the wiring is right, since you know what your doing and do not make simple mistakes, then either you flucked somethin up, or the speaker just shot craps. That's a decision that people on a forum can't help you with. Either way it sounds brokededed.
