Hi guys so im new to this forum and i have a question, I got a old Caliber CA 505N amp and i connected it to a 450w PSU (the amp is 1050w) and when i connect my speakers or subwoofer it makes a weird noise when playing loud. The subwoofer makes a "knocking" noise and the speakers just crackle and stop. the Subwoofer is 600 watt (300 rms) speakers are 200 watt (RMS) tested my subwoofer and speakers on a 300 watt amp and it works just fine. I wanna know if its the caliber amp or my PSU. Because The subwoofer is not bottoming out at all. (SUB: Renegade rxv 1200) (SPEAKERS: Renegade RX 42).

I need a multimeter for to know that right? The problem is i dont have one :/
no, you would need a multimeter to test how much voltage the amp is getting from your source. Im not sure what thatpurplekush was asking for tho, whether it was the voltage being sent to the amp or what the amps input voltage range is. Perhaps both

nevermind, i just re-read thatpurplekush's comment and yes, he does seem to be asking for the voltage from the source at the amp. I has the dumb today

I just hooked up another PSU with thicker 12v cables and it didnt do it again..... i guess it is the PSU then i will try in a car in a couple of days to be sure //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Just as I suspected, the amp didn't have a strong enough power source (insufficient voltage) causing it to go into protect mode and shut down. You should measure the voltage going into the amp with a multimeter. Continuous low voltage severely shortens an amp's life.

It's very likely this has to do with box rise and the fact that you should test for clipping along the entire frequency range that the sub plays...

No need to bypass the amp. Most use an LOC that takes the full amped signal and turns it into a flat RCA level signal. Here is the newest I have...

It would also be easy to add an equalizer to have individual rca inputs for all of the channels. A decent one can be had for less than $40...
