Ok so i've been looking for a budget system and I came across a MTX Thunder4202 for 35 bucks, works great. So I met this guy up to buy his Cerwin Vega 12in in a ported box for 70 bucks. He demo'ed the sub in his car for me and I listened for any abnormal sounds like voice coil rub or anything.. sounded great and wanged pretty hard. So I give him the cash and head home to set everything up. So I get home plug the sub in and no output at all, I tap the sub a little with my fingers and hear a scratching sound. If I push in on the cone of the sub it works... it I let go sometimes it plays sometime it doesn't but theres scratching sounds. I opened the box up to check wiring and played it free air with the same result. WTF is wrong? when he demo'ed it for me it played perfectly fine.

I also tryed using my alpine 4-chan amp and got the same result, so the MTX amp I bought is in good condition. I than tryed my 9in woofer laying around and it plays fine on both amps. Any advice is appreciated:verymad:

this is the model number http://www.adelcom.net/CerwinVegaVSSubs.htm its the Vega series 12in 124 svc 4ohm

He was lucky he got rid of it when he did...he must of jacked everything up on his amp for that final demo...probally something he wanted to do from the day he bought it...and figured since he was getting rid of it...came the perfect oppurtunity....plain and simple fried the sub

Ok how did he fry the sub? I don't understand how it can play perfectly fine and 20min later doesnt play for ****. He didn't really seem to know what he was doing either since the whole setup looked to be installed by a shop.

What should the DMM read? its a single 4-ohm coil

Im gonna borrow a dmm and try the sub in my friends car and go from there. The dude said he would meet up with me tomorrow and test the sub in his ride again where it SEEMED to play perfectly fine.

It sounds like everything here was unintentional and u just didn't know how to hook it up or was just sh!tty equipment lol no offence, i hope it all works out for ya tho man.

Yeah tell me about it. If I leave it alone there is no output, if I push in the cone it plays fine. 1 thing I should mention, when I took it out of the box to check the tinsel leads and stuff I noticed something stuck in the vent on the magnet, like a wire mesh round piece, it was just stuck in the vent. From what it looks like its just a cover to prevent stuff from going inside the motor.

Most likely a loose connection somewhere between the tensils and the VC.
I checked the tinsels, sometimes if its left alone (me not pressing on the cone) it'll play but with scratching sounds, than from that point if I press on it (like its making contact with something) it will play fine.

MY MAIN question is how the hell on earth did it play perfectly fine in the guys car.

I ment in between that and the VC, you'll have to pop the dust cap off to confirm anything though.

It could've broke right after he was done playing it.

Hopefully it was a dank box it came in.

Meet up with the dude and see what is up, sounds weird to me, you got the sub out of his trunk right after the demo right? Or did he drive around for 2 hours and then give it to you?

He demo'ed it, I grabbed it out of his trunk, put it in mine, drove 5 miles, took the sub out of the box to check what ohm the voice coil was and hooked it up to find out it wasn't playing right.

How would I go about the "popping off" of the dustcap? I could just glue it back on right? if he doesn't give me my money back im gonna end up doing it anyways, could care less about cosmetics.
