Is this the act of "clamping" an O-scope to an amp to measure the output?

Usually that means a multimeter at the speaker output to measure current to get the total used power of an amp.

Clamping is the measuring of amperes with a clamp meter. In car audio when clamping an amp it involves the clamping of the positive speaker output while playing the amp, and measuring the ac voltage at the speaker terminals, the 2 measurment together will tell you the actual output power of the amplifier, as well as the ohm load.

You got it. Measure at the same time and multiply the results for your power. You can divide the results to find the load.
