Ok there was a thunder storm here a few hours ago and i wasnt home. When i left I left my laptop on with the phone cord plugged into my modem. Well while i was gone lightning struck the telephones in my town and it went through my modem well now i cant get on the internet with my laptop.

Now My computer says the modem is working properly but to protect my system it can go "off the hook" because of the strong current or voltage that went through it and if you plug the phone line in my phones busy and if you unplug it my phones fine so can anyone tell me how to fix this problem?

FYI: heres exactly wat the pop up box says about my modem.

Modem Warning

The modem has detected a current ot voltage level on the telphone line which could damage your hardware.

To protect your system, the modem has not been allowed to go off-hook.

sorry for long post please help thanks

Surge protectors are your friends.

If your modem took an indirect strike that caused a surge on the line...good luck with that. I'd say you're SOL if it wasn't protected; but who knows, you might get lucky.

Ok well I just got off this site about modems and they said that my modem is most likely permanently "off the hook" and cant be fixed. Now what i need to know is there a modem you can buy thats internal in the laptop like the one it had and how much would it cost and how would you put it in and all? thanks

It would help to know what kind of laptop it is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

That's like asking for a car part without telling us what kind of car it is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

So basically my modem is screwed and i need to know what kind to get now anyone know?

I would call CDW or Newegg or any place that deals in computer hardware. It shouldn't be too much work to replace the 56k internal modem, as long as you get the correct part...I'm sure calling up an online store would help you immensely.
