I dont know a whole lot about home theater, and i wont pretend that i do, so i need some help.

My roommates boos gave him his old Klipsch speakers today because he is moving and doesnt want to take them with him. What he has consists of an apparently powered subwoofer, one center channel, and 4 other speakers(i dont know their technical name).

The model numbers are(all klipsch):

Center channel: KV1

Subwoofer: SW8-II

4 others: KG.5

I know these things are kinda old, about 12 years im guessing, but they look like they are well made and they look like good speakers as far as i can tell.

I need to know what all i need to make use of these speakers. He didnt give him his receiver, so i know i will need one of those.

What kinds of things do I need to look for when shopping for a receiver? What kind of brands are good for home receivers?

Any other information about this setup will be appreciated as well.

Thanks

On a quick google search, I noticed that most of the stuff is about 50-65w rms. I normally recommend high current receivers, but all of them would blow your setup. Look for a receiver that's a Dolby Prologic II 5.1. You don't have a lot of room to play with, but you won't spend a lot of money on a receiver either, due to the low power you are loking for. Personally, I would not invest money into a receiver for those speakers, as they are very outdated (Not to say that they weren't good build quality).

A receiver is kinda like a H/U in a car, IMHO, it should be the very start of any home theatre system. When looking for a receiver, some good brands are Onkyo, Denon, Pioneer, etc.. You want to make sure that your receiver has enough input/outputs as in comparison to what you are going to hook it up to. Are you going to be using it to listen to mainly movies, music, or both?

Also, Optical cables are very nice when trying to get the true Dolby Digital.

EDIT: I had Eclipse listed in there....woops.

BTW I have the freaking perfect receiver for you:)

It is a Toshiba SD-6109, it is a receiver/dvd player all in one and it is about 50 watts per channel.

here is a link for specs, pm me if you are interested, i will let it go pretty cheap cause it isnt being used

i have the original box, manual, remote and i will throw in some interconnects if you need them

That would be perfect for his setup. Also, thanx for pointing out the Eclipse discrepancy....//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rotflol.gif.b453361716769b8110ddefc85ff03cd2.gif

I don't see that happening, receivers don't put out that much power...

My old Mirage speakers are rated at 70 to 90 watts RMS and my reciever (Denon AVR-3805) is rated at 160 watts RMS @ 6 ohms ( which is what the speakers are) and I have had NO problems with over powering them. If you hear distortion just turn it the FUCK down.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/graduate.gif.d982460be9f153bb54e5d4cb744f6ae8.gif

Those speakers while older will outperform 90% of the crap out there today. Those who think otherwise don't know jack about Klipsch speakers.

The KG .5's will take more than the rated power as long as it is clean undistorted power. That setup cost quite a bit of money when new. The .5's have long throw 5.25" woofers and a horn loaded tweeter and are pretty efficient so you won't need tons of power to get them loud.

The Onkyo suggested is a good choice I have some of the older versions the SR 502 and 503 and they perform great and have a ton of features and DSP options for entry level receivers. I got mine for around $150 - $200 shipped from uBid.com

That is a nice speaker array and it will easily outperform any HTIB (Home Theater in a Box)

You will be impressed once you get that system setup correctly.

KG.5 was a hell of a little bookshelf speaker. Too bad they don't make stuff like them any more... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Just find a cheap 5.1 used receiver. I'm a big fan of the Pioneer RX-V series ones.

Not true at all. The receivers that I sell are mainly around 85-120w rms per channel. Not all used cheap receivers are good either. Please don't make posts in an area where you are uncertain of.
