How did you connect it? You're suppose to turn up the volume so it can start distorting.

it was one of those four foot tubes and i put the + speaker wire on one end and the - on the other.

You're suppose to have the light bulb only on the negative side. Just connect the both ends of the light bulb to the negative speaker wire. You should only do this for speakers, not subs.

it doesn't eat up distortion, it lights up to burn off the 'extra power' that could effect your speakers.
