so basically i have to watch the voltage of the battery/recharge constantly to make sure it doesnt die?

Not constanstly, just check it at full tilt w/DMM and see what it drops too, anything below 11.5 or so is bad.

I personally go to garage sales/thrift stores/garage sales and gather up 3 or computer psu's, it always works for me.
