ok, here is a bit of the background. the sub is a mtx9515-44 on a mtx 1501d. i have a beefy electrical setup. kinetic battery, big 3 upgrade, 320 HO alt, etc. soo i turn my car off one day at the gas station, hear a "thud" i check the trunk, there is smoke billowing out of the port..so i disconnect the power from the battery. i have gutted the system out of the trunk. so my first assumption is the voice coils are fried...but i just tested both today..they are both still testing 3.8 and 3.7 OHMS...SOOO WHAT COULD BE WRONG?!?! lol. i really dont know much about repairing subs. this whole thing is just an excuse for me to build my dream system..18" sundown in a 4.5 cubed box tuned to 35htz..so i just really want to know how to resell this MTX..sell it as broken for parts? or is it a fairly easy fix??

ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED. THANK YOU

-Jason

...does the sub still work? Wouldn't that kind of tell you if it's blown or not?

Put a 9v battery on the terminals and see if it pops. That smoke had to come from somewhere...

i havent tested it yet, i have pushed down on the cone and it is smooth. no cracks or resistance. i can still smell the scent of electrical fire if i smell the vents by the voice coils though..

Ok well first test it with a 9v battery like I said. The cone should either go out or in depending on the polarity (if you reverse the polarity it will do the opposite). Test both coils. This is a fairly easy test and should only take 5 minutes.

Or better yet, hook it up to a known working amplifier and just TEST IT

hmmmm maybe your amp went boom and started sending dc to your sub. that would get the coils real hot real fast.if the sub survived i personally wouldn't feel right selling it to somebody in 100% functional condition. The sub may last a while or it may last a minute.

i dont think anything is wrong with the amp..it has no funny odors and still turn on fine. i bought it brand new like 5 months ago..idk. and yea, im the same way, i dont want to give any person who buys this a false idea of what they are buying. i would never do that, thus why i am trying to troubleshoot it and find out exactly what is wrong with it b4 i sell it.
