I been thinking of getting me a quad...

OK there is not near enough information in this thread to answer your question. How tall are you, weight, what you wana do with the thing...all these make a big impact on your purchase.

The YFZ 450 is a good solid quad, good bike for a starter,
The YFZ450 is not a good bike for starters, theyre high-strung racing bikes.

This thread is basically equivelent to a thread with just "what kinda subwoofer should i buy"

I agree with the above poster. The yfz450 isn't really a good "starter" quad.

Something more along the lines of a raptor 350 would be better for a starter. Then down the road upgrade.

The suzuki z400 is a pretty nice quad with quite a bit of aftermarket support, for upgrades in the future.I'd never throw a beginner on a 700R and not expect him/her to crash.

not expect him/her to crash.
...Or die.

Raptor 350 should do it, if you don't already know how to use a manual 6-speed the 350 will be easy to learn on. It's just a warrior with new plastics basically, **** engine been around 20 years it's a real solid platform.

Also check out the 06 honda 250ex, it has the sportclutch... kinda like a hybrid between an auto and a manual clutch. (it's a manual but you cant stall it)

Another option suzuki ltz250, semi-auto 5 speed entry level sport bike, shaft driven. very low maintenence.

If you can already ride manual clutch check out the 400ex, the 06 models have reverse and updated plastics. Also check out the z400, manual clutch, reverse.

There are so many options. It's all gonna come down to your experience, weight, height, and how serious you are about the sport.

Usually, that'd include crashing. That's why I said the raptor 350, I've owned 4 warriors in the past, all were solid.Given regular mainenence.

Most, if not all people who ride ATV's regularly, will crash at least once.Sometimes more.Usually once is enough to learn a lesson //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I raced quads for about 4 years. If you are just starting out, get a 400ex. The 400ex is a great starter and everyone makes parts for it, so down the line you can bore it out, add shocks, a-arms, axles, everything. Thats what i would reccomend. If you have the money go with a trx450 or yfz450. I have always been partial to hondas so i would say the trx just because ive never had a bad honda! Dont let anyone talk you into a dirtbike. I switched from quads to bikes and wishd i wouldnt have. Check out a Z400 if you absolutely need reverse, but unlike honda, ive never owned a good suzuki. Many people like them though. Oh and the only big difference between the z and the ex is reverse and water cooling.

anything but a 2stroke i work in a atv shop and most of our money comes from dealing with ****ed up 2 strokes..... sure its alot easier to repair than a 4 , but it breaks down 2x as much plus if u dont dogg the piss out of the 2 stroke u foul out plugs like crazy

good bike to learn on 300ex good starter bike 400ex if u got the balls to try, its not that fast just dont bore it out to 440

telling a newbie rider to buy a Raptor 700R is like telling a guy thats never touched a motorcycle in his life to go out and buy a turbocharged hayabusa as his starter bike

I race a polaris predator which is built and balls to the wall. Yet to be beatin in a drag race. I would suggest you go after something used. First off the predator was my first quad. If you dont do stupid things, stupid things wont happen. I flipped mine a few times being stupid. As for starting with something small...... ahhh i dunno man i agree maybe for a bike becasue there a little diffrent to control but for a quad after about 6 months of riding the same thing you will want something with a lot more power. I wouldnt look into that 450 yam because they have problems with them blowing the motor when topped out in 5th gear, had a buddy do it while i was dragging him. Same dude that refused to believe me when i told him that they had this problem before he bought the bike. I would probly go after something like a used polaris scrambler 500, used banshee, or maybe a honda 450 r.............. All depends on what you want out of the quad each one has specific benifits for certain things.......

I like Yahama, but to be honest I love runnin shit over in a utility ATV..

My cousin runs a 450 and Raptor and we plan to hit up the Dunes in LA or OK mid summer..

You should come out if you got one..

If you have no experience, don't get anything other than a 400ex or z400. I own one of each and those have been ridden hard with zero problems at all, and are much cheaper than the newer 450's that have come out. The 400ex has good power, more than enough to haul a 200lb person around. However, if you do decide on a 450, get z450, those things kick ***.
