Yes it does give better heat distribution and is easier to cook with, but seriously it is a pain. I like tasting what I am cooking and how I am cooking it, not what I cooked last week, so coal must be replaced every time, that and without a height adjustable grill it is impossible to properly cook different foods at different heats quickly.
Coal done right tastes about the same as a $2000 propane grill (and not one of those gay ones at home depot with the cooler and twenty five side burners), but it is not worth the effort if you grill as much as I do.
