I am fat

like the title says, the beer and fast food has taken a toll on me //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif. I'm not really looking to build muscle, just trying to get into shape. Any tips? Anything i should take? I'm about 5"7 and just over 200lbs.
Anything you can take? Like what? Magic pill? Knock off the beer and fast food and start exercising. Not a popular thing for alot of people to hear because it involves sacrifice and hard work without a magic pill solution.

Don't waste time with any diet you couldn't live with forever. Get the crap out of your diet and eat an apple from time to time. Weight training, calisthenics, or some sort of muscle-building needs to be a part of your routine. Cardio burns calories while you do it. Muscle burns more calories while you're sitting on your *** watching TV, drinking a beer.

Alternate. Do cardio a couple times per week, building up from long walks to to alternating walking with jogging to light jogging or stationary bike or whatever works best for you. The other days, start with pushups, situps, and lunges and work into weight lifting. Always be sure to stretch.

Take it easy. Don't over work yourself at the beginning or you'll get tired of it and quit. Don't completely cut out what you like to eat or you'll loose will-power and eventually engorge yourself.

I drink beer every day and there is tons of crap in my diet. I had a 32 ounce steak the other day, bacon and a cinnabon for breakfast this morning. I eat cheesesteaks a few times per week and mostly buy my lunch as Im too lazy to brown bag it. I smoke half a pack a day.

I am a solid 200 pounds with 6 percent bodyfat, bench 255, and can do a good solid 3-4 miles when I need to. I used to put ALOT more work into it, now I find alot of weeks I can get away with hitting the gym 4 times per week or less, some times only 2-3 times per week if Im busy with a bunch of pushups and situps at home on the days when I don't go. I find at this point if I put the time and work into my body I can get away with eating alot of things and still be fine. But you have to get off your *** and sweat a little.

If you are eating only a couple of bigger meals a day as opposed to eating say 6+ small meals per day, your body stores it differently. It's better to eat more frequently and smaller quantities at a time so that your body doesn't store it as fat.

And just do something everyday. Doesn't have to be a strict workout like going for a run. Go play some basketball, or go for a bike ride. Just do something that is active that will get your heart rate up.

Like other people said, just do whatever makes you happy, because you have to stick with it and keep it up. Otherwise, you will end up putting the weight back on and giving it up. Running or swimming is awesome for some people, and others hate it. Find what you like.

For example, if I wasn't training for a specific event, I probably wouldn't be as strict about my workout schedule as I am. But you have to find what gets you out the door.

Check out some exercise websites and forums......don't look for advise here.

try water aerobics as well. they have whats called aqua swimmer its like a life jacket that's actually a weight. Using that vest will not only act as walking but with 0 impact and moving thru the water will be twice as much work on the body and faster results with little to no strain on the body. Best thing to do if you want to shed a few pounds. In fact that's what I'm doing myself. Lost about 10 pounds in the first two weeks (along with cutting the fast food and soda) try swimming it is really a form of exercise that is less traveled and is the best for you.
Very interested in that...got a link?

Well I know some people here work out and stuff so figured I'd see what they are doing. I walk to work everyday which takes about a half hr each way. I know my eating habits are not helping at all. Is there any supplements or anything I can/should take?

Nope, supplements aren't to GET you there, they are to take you a little further when you are already in good shape, you plateau, and you just aren't able to consume the amount of calories necessary to meet specific size and strength goals using normal foods.

When you walk to work how are you doing it? Are you atually trying to work up a sweat or is this a liesurely, relaxed stroll that barely gets the heart rate up?

Really, no magic pill, no supplements. Simple sweat and grunt work along with exercising some dietary discipline til you loose some weight and get your metabolism up. People are naturally averse to these concepts, hence the popularity of costly miracle diet plans that are only followed for a few months before the weight comes back and 'made for tv only' exercise contraptions that end up quickly gathering dust in the closet.

If you're not sweating and out of breath you're not working hard enough. It really is that simple. IF there are decent gyms in your area you can bet there's trainers who could help you get started for free or a nominal fee if you're signing up for the first time. Start by walking a little faster and doing a few pushups and situps when you get home at night. Build from there. So many people think you have to buy new stuff, take pills, and pay fees to loose weight. It can be done that way but you can get started for zero dollars. Focus on lifestyle changes first before you think about ANYTHING else.
