HU w/out amp?

Right now I have an older Alpine tape unit connected to a changer. Running some not so new MB Quart comps up front, I don't know about the back (previous owner put the 4 speakers in) and I don't really care. Running them off a 50x4 RMS Alpine amp. In the hatch I have a Shiva running off a Profile Clarus amp (300 RMS).

Basically, the bass is there, the quarts deliver nice highs, but all else is just weak. I have heard other people's systems with 'lesser' equipment that has more in the mids department. Beyond that, it just doesn't sound like I think it should, and I think the HU is to blame.

My car has a stock EQ that I tried to get functioning, at one point it worked and I could make the speakers sound much better, but the wiring was **** near impossible and it was filled with humming and distortion.

Assuming that the weak point here is the older alpine tape deck, I'm looking for a unit without an amp (or can be disabled) that will give me more control over the sound (tape deck has bass and treble only ). I know the Alpine 7995 is a nice unit without amp, but what kind of sound control does it have? And I'm open to suggestions of anything else in that price range, but not too much over.

Also, the stock EQ is shaped oddly, and I don't know if I could fit a DIN-wide seperate EQ in there.

Clarion HX-D10 $165 plus shipping. Refurb off Ebay. got one yesterday. Sounds pretty good with bass/treb/mid adjustments and crossover points as well. I know the deck at one time was $700. 4 volt outs x 6. just a thought. unbeatable for the price.

would have rather had a Premier hu BUT for the money it is great. I do not regret selling my C-910 at all.

it deopends on how much you want to spend on a deck. the eclipse 8053 is an unreal SQ head unit. the alpine 7995 has some more features, but for SQ, i personally would rather have the eclipse.

The 7995 is an older model, the cool thing about all Alpine's is that you can turn off the internal amp after you add on down the road. I think the little honey in the Alpine line-up is the CDA-9813. I like the cosmetics of the 9815 better, and the display, but really the same deck different color.

that seems to be kind of a pointless option. i understand the power conservation part of it, but if it isnt connected to anything, why would you bother with turning it off? i think it is probably based towards people with dual setups in their cars. i may be wrong.

Even if the amp is not connected to anything. It is still ON and drawing current from your 12v system. To be able to turn that internal amp OFF enables you to stop that amp from using any power at all. Why send power to an amp your not even using?

I like the on/off feature for the internal amp.

I thought the idea was that if you didn't have power off the deck then that meant the unit had more space inside for better design and parts. I mean who reallt runs their stuff off the deck power? SO why pay for something you don't need? I would rather spend the money on the other parts that matter.

Of course who really knows what is inside the deck. Until it breaks nobody looks inside. there may be crappy parts inside a powerless deck also.

the HX-D10 is suppossed to have some better parts inside...

don't know. still it was $160 and works fine
