HP Increase From 5.2L

I have a 98' Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a 5.2L V8.....im trying to get it to have a faster time 0-60 off the line...what would be the best...cheapest way....I was think a K&N FIPK and then a Jet Chip Stage 2...What do you think??

im thinking about spending around $300...im low on cash since i just blew a bunch on exhaust and my system...i was thinking either a chip or K&N FIPK(26.3 hp increase). Anyone have any other ideas for better acceleration....thanks

Originally posted by denim both of those would be solid, but what about new plus and wires, everyone forgets them, and maybe a large diameter air mass meter and throttle body?
Those would work, but at this point I think his money would be better spent on an ECU. just for the plain fact that his throttle body was made for his current engine, and until his horsepower gets probably about 15-20% higher than stock, his current throttle body/mam are plenty.

well.....what would you sacrifice?

the cheapest, best way to make something faster is to put it on a diet.....ditch the spare...any misc. items...passenger seat, hell you could even take out some of the interior trim panels and gut the sheet metal around the wheel wells.

you also might be able to advance the timing to gain a couple hp...CAI's are relatively ez to make for most vehicles...if you're really lazy and cheap you could go to the store.....buy a bag of ice and bungee cord it to your intake box //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif.

the K&N sounds better then a chip....

i'll admit i dont like chips...all the usually do is make you run a little leaner... if they make one for your jeep go get an A/F controller

He's not looking into making his vehicle into a death trap.

Ive seen a car literally blow up because the timing was messed with a few minutes earlier.

On the dyno sheet you will notice an increase in hp...dont be suprised if you dont notice a whole lot from behind the wheel by doing the mods listed above.

Oh, my suggestions...chip/module, headers/exhaust, throttle body spacer, etc...

how is lack of a spare...lack of a passenger seat...or lack of a few plastic trim panels going to decrease safety..... ?

as for the excess sheetmetal around the wheel wells....i didnt think it contributed anything structurally but i guess i could be wrong...i'll ask on another board

its not like i told him to remove the front and rear bumper assemblies...ditch the hood,

take off his headlights and take out any airbags/seatbelts in the vehicle...

hell while you're at it you could even ditch the ac and power steering if you have it. i could see how the power steering might *possibly effect safety...but the ac..it'll just be uncomfortable.

...yikes....i never knew a car could blow up because of the timing, how exactly did that happen..was the car alread modded, or was it stock.. just curious //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

also, i 2nd the headers/exhaust combo... providing your oem components are really that restrictive.

What I meant was I dont think he wants to strip his vehicle to become a racer...just a daily driver with a little extra punch.

It was an RX-7...older model...maybe an 89 or so...he did the turbo and all new wires, headers, intake, etc...all the normal mods. Then he messed with the timing...and the engine blew up on him...still, 2 years later...were still trying to figure out what caused it.

Any ideas? Were looking for somewhere fresh to start..

lol...yeah i do go overboard a bit ...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

as for the rx-7....i'm guessing the increase in timing (i'm also guessing he bumped it up a bit as opposed to retarding it) prolly led to detonation, maybe it was fine w/ the current timing but right on the border between detonation and normal running...if he moved te spark farther from the top of the compression stroke and increased the max clyinder pressure then i could see it detonating...

did he make any compensatory (i dunno if thats a word....but i think it is //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif ) fuel mods? larger injectors..fuel rail and fuel pump? if all he did was increase the air flow the ecu might not have been able to supply enough fuel to keep it from detonating... (or maybe it managed to barely...until he increased the timing)

but of course i'm just guessing

We were/are thinking that its because he advanced the timing a bit too much...he played around with it until finally he detonated. The only fuel mod he did was a new fuel pump.

- Steve

yep...that sounds right...the new fuel pump will naturally increase the amount of fuel but not as much as it would w/ larger injectors and maybe a larger fuel rail....imo if you're using some kind of forced induction you should go just as balls out w/ the fuel supply as you do w/ the air supply....

theres really just 2 senarios...

you can run lean which could lead to detonation and a blown engine....

or you could run rich and possibly burn up your cat...

i'd rather lose a cat then an engine :p

My a/c in my jeep has got a leak and doesnt work anyway....my parents are to cheap to fix it so what do you have to do to your a/c to get more power. Right now it just blows air from the outside of the car....how much horse/torque would i gain??

...you wouldnt actually *gain any hp...but you would get a *slightly faster 0-60 time if you removed the ac and all of its components....you'd just increase your power to weight ratio but a small amount...
