as for the rx-7....i'm guessing the increase in timing (i'm also guessing he bumped it up a bit as opposed to retarding it) prolly led to detonation, maybe it was fine w/ the current timing but right on the border between detonation and normal running...if he moved te spark farther from the top of the compression stroke and increased the max clyinder pressure then i could see it detonating...

) fuel mods? larger injectors..fuel rail and fuel pump? if all he did was increase the air flow the ecu might not have been able to supply enough fuel to keep it from detonating... (or maybe it managed to barely...until he increased the timing)
but of course i'm just guessing
