How to wire two dual 4 ohm subs to 2ohms?

Hey guys, I have two dual 4 ohm subs and I want to wire them to run at 2 ohms on a monoblock amp.

Is this possible? I've read in a few places that it's not.

2 dual 4 will give you 1 ohm or 4

I've read that you can wire just one of the voice coils to solve this issue... But wouldn't that change a bunch of things? I'm pretty lost with this.

Cant be done. Your options are 1 ohm and 4 ohm.

I guess the only way to really get a 2 ohm load from a pair of dual 4 ohms is to use 2 amps. Each one running 2 ohms. It's more complicated this way and kinda pointless if you ask me. You're better off running at 1 ohm with one amp though as it's the best bang for the buck. If your amp is not 1 ohm stable, then get one that is. Otherwise getting a lot of power at 4 ohms is expensive. Some of the old school amps you could bridge at 4 ohms though, which is just as good.

You can short one of the VC's on each sub (jumper + to - on one VC and don't connect it to anything else). Then you can wire the other VC from each sub in parallel to get a 2 ohm load.

IF you do this, then derate your power by ~75% to be safe.

I ran a JL dual 4ohm VC sub like this for years without any issues at all. The theory behind shorting the unused VC is that it increases damping so the sub & enclosure behave roughly the same way it did with 2 VCs wired.

There is a paper written about the theory on this somewhere - I will look for the link later.
