Second that, I'd like to know why as well. Having such a long ground wire isn't that good.

Grounding to the other battery through a piece of wire is going to have much less resistance than through they body of the vehicle to the other battery.

Yes its a long run, but also think of the amount of steel it must also travel through as well. and when you factory in that welded joints.
