How to test amp power output?

In an AC circuit (like on the output of your amp) the correct measurement of power is Vrms*Irms*PowerFactor = Power in watts.

To avoid the power factor component, you have to use a purely resistive load and you must keep it as close to room temperature as possible. It's really more work than it's worth unless you have everything you need (true RMS current meter, scope to make sure you're not clipping, strong enough DC power supply to keep voltage stable, and a big resistive load (no, your speakers do NOT count)).
