How to tell if sub is blown...

So i got my cousin a 10 inch type r and helped him build the box. We hooked it up to a home stereo free air and gave it like maybe maybe 50 watts free air and it sounded good. Then he wanted to test it and he didn't have his amp so he brought to a friends and hooked it up to his amp. I have no idea what kinda power the amp was giving it but it as a lower level kenwood excellon one...and a 2 channel so i doubt it gave it too much power. But the sub gave off a kinda rattling noise when it hit hard and not quite as much bass as i thought it should of. I'm kinda worried one coil might be fried or something...but i also noticed that the sub wasn't mounted great and the box wasn't nearly airtight, especially around the trim ring on the sub. So basically i was wondering if it's blown as i have no way to test it right now...cuase i'm in the middle of no where and the only dmm we have is broken...and we have no amp. thx

Hearing noises is not good.

Take the sub out of the box and put it back on the kenwood free air and see if it still makes the noise.

If so The coil is probley rubbing and that could be a few things.

All of which is not worth fixing cause you could get a new one for cheaper.

I only consider a sub blown if its burned up. If it's coils are rubbing / frozen, I just call it f'd up //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif
Ok if the coils are dual 2ohms and they are reading 8 ohms you call that just focked up?

To me the coils are burnt.

if it is wut i think it is... then its the air noise that comes out the box(air leak) that ur talking about, seal it good.

the noise sounded like it was coming from the sub. But we could clearly feel air coming out around the trim ring/outer edge of the sub where it met the box...cuase the kid who put the screws in did a really shitty job.

try it free-air and see if it does that sound, or unscrew it a bit, and rescrew it to make it airtight

it did the same thing to me once, it wasnt screwed right...thought it was the sub, but it was really the air leak comin' out, made an awfull sound with low note music....

I hooked it back up to his home stereo and it sounded **** good free air, with a little nelly playin. It wasn't gettin much power but it sounded great and was loud enough for me to here downstairs pretty clearly. Hopefully it was just bottoming out or something from too much power and the box not being sealed well. Thats logical right??? I'll dmm it tommorrow and make sure the coils read right...and whenever loki gets my amp shipped check it out on that....but i feel a little better...again.
