Seeing how the tuning is high, I am betting the velocity and of course cone movement is tremendous below 40hz. Maybe try an SSF set fairly high(35 maybe) and see if that rectifies it. Of course then it will be a very narrow band SPL fart maker, but with that tuning it is obvious thats what you want. I am guessing this is what your friend was trying to explain.
