How to know what kind of RAM you have?

Ooh, and should I run 1gb total, or 1.5gb? I read somewhere that more is not inherently better, and that 1 gb is the best for gaming right now. Is this true?

I've got an Nvidia 6600 ultra and an amd 64 3200+ processor (2.0 ghz). I can run NFSMU w/o problems, sims 2, far cry and any of the other moderately taxing games (I own HL2, but i haven't installed it on this PC) with full settings.

umm easiest way to tell what ram you have is to pull it out and count the pins and notice where the grooves are. this will determine DDR, DDR2, RDRam, SD Ram, Simms etc. as for speed it is hard to tell that without knowing codes on the stick, what motherboard do you have? this can also determine what memory yuou are most likely running or should be running. with a Athlon 64 you are most liely running DDR or DDR2 speed can be anywhere from PC1600-PC6200 DDR or PC2 3200- PC2 8500 on ddr2

my AMD is running PC2700 DDR but my P4 is running PC2 4200 DDR2

you can run speed over 3200 that is still DDR, but its going to be limited to PC3200 speed, make sure not to buy a DDR2 stick, those start at the 4000 numbers, my computer uses pc5400

try to get an even number of sticks so you can run dual channel memory, has to be the same memory in each bank

Ok thanks y'all, but now my mobo manual is fukin with my mind (found it after cleanin my closet). It says that I can only run certain configurations. How can I tell the latency of the 512 stick i've got, and wtf is the difference between single side and double side?
