how to invert ZV4

so my zv4 needs to be inverted to fit and I'm wondering how i should go about the rubber ring that the sub has. do you guys just remove them or flip them or leave them like if installing normal. also what screws do you use? its double baffled

It would be ok to leave the gasket as it is. If you want to see the Sundown text, flip the gasket. If you double layered your MDF, use longer screws. 1.5 inch would be ideal, but I think you'd be fine with 2 inch deck screws

i like the sundown text so i flipped it but id fits weird like it doesn't sit proper. the gasket is just for looks right? and for the screws what kind though the ones with a lot of thread or the lower threaded ones? i should pre-drill the holes swell correct?

The gasket does seal around the metal frame. If you don't care about looks, you could ditch the gasket and use rope calk around the edge. Your best bet is deck screws that have spaced out thread. Fine thread is more for metal. Pre-drilling is a must when working with MDF IMO..

I thought this thread was going to be about the surround when I saw it pop up

the rope calk would be to secure the surround to frame although its already glued down right? the pre drilling is with the same size as screws used or slightly smaller so screw can form its own threads?

that **** surround worries me as well. its so **** big I'm scared it'll rip from rubbing on the wood. the mounting hole is slightly bigger for that very reason but still should i be worried?

The rope caulk would be to seal the frame to the box. It would make it airtight, which is the gasket's job. It is not for the surround.

I pre-drill with a very small bit. Its just to keep a uniform hole and not split the MDF too bad.

I was worried about the surround too. The only subs I have inverted did not have big surrounds. I love Sundown and have owned a couple of their subs. I was planning on buying a pair of Z4 12's, but bought some DD9512h's today. The DD's have more usable surface area (sd).

Just make sure it doesn't rub on the edges of the MDF

ok cool thanks for the info, one last thing since I'm only inverting one sub theres no need to reverse polarity correct? just wire it the same as if mounted regular?

Since one is regular and one is inverted, reverse the polarity of the inverted one. This keeps it in phase with the regular one.

Welcome to the dark side. Enjoy and let the haters hate.

That rope caulk stuff makes a hell of a mess. Effective, but messy. I'd stick to just the gasket as it is installed from the factory. Considering the outside most 1/4 of the surround isn't "live" (doesn't move) that shouldn't be rubbing. Also you can push through the surround with your fingers to feel where your mounting hole edges are to confirm it's well centered.
