How to ask for a raise?

I have been working at Circuit City for about 4 months now. I currently make 8 dollars an hour. I got hired right before all of the seasonal people got hired so I am just part time. I am probably the number one sales person for pc's and pc services, yet there is another kid who sells nothing and makes 9.75 just because he showed up before me. Before they started cutting new people to 8. I was wondering how I should go about aproaching my manager and asking for a raise. I beleive you get 2 raises a year here, between .25 and .75 each time, but it's .25 all of the time so I hear.

you really really really not supposed to ever do this unless you and your boss have a very strong relationship.....it was an article on yahoo awhile back

Do you absolutely need a raise?? I'm guessing you don't. If you want more money, a good thing to do is ask your boss if there is any way you could squeeze in some more hours. For my previous bosses at least, it showed them that you are a hard worker, which could lead to raises. Also, 4 months is not very long at all to be working somewhere. In high school when I worked at Kings Supermarkets they gave us a 40 cent raise every 6 months.

Isn't Circuit City the scum company that laid off a bunch of well paid employees to hire cheap newbs last year? If so I wouldn't push the pay issue to far or you may suffer the same fate...

Yeah that is what I have been doing, asking for more hours.

Isn't that pretty much...any company that hires hourly employees like this?

Where I work we get a raise every 6months, alternates from .50cent and $1.00 each time you get a raise. We get 4 total and top out in 2years, everybody gets the same. Not bad, other then working in whatever weather condition it is.

In an environment like Best Buy/CC I do not think it happens the same way it does in a Corporate/Executive job where it is a little more common (though not always considered good taste) to do something like that.

I am not sure if you work on commission are your current job but if you don't and you are a good salesman why not find another job where you can make commission of your sales?

In the past I have usually just looked for a new job if I feel I am worth more and I get a 3% raise each year which I think is pretty standard.

Not just hourly //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crap.gif.7f4dd41e3e9b23fbd170a1ee6f65cecc.gif

But I believe Circuit City had some massive press about it last year. Any job that can outsource cheap labor will do it, any job that can't will insource cheap crappy labor.

Wonderful world the employee lives in today.
