How often do you use WinISD or Bassbox?

Just curious about how many people here use WinISD or some other box designing software when designing a box. I've never used it or really experimented with the response curve it gives you vs what it sounds like in the real world but it sort of seems pointless to me. But then again I've only made sealed boxes so far.

Just to see initial ported box behavior (pre cabin gain), xmax potiential and air velocity thats basically it. You'll have to factor your vehicles cabin gain/peak frequency along with goals of the setup to get the bandwidth you want and the spl you want.

How do you find your vehicles cabin gain? All vehicles are different. I know that to get your peak frequency you just put a subwoofer in a sealed box and play notes until you find it, right?

you need an RTA or termlab.

measure the sealed box sub out of the car. Then measure it inside the car. Subtract the differences and plot a new graph with the difference and you get your cabin gain.

normally your ported peak is 5-10hz above your box tuning frequency so tune accordingly to make the best use of it.

If you have natural high gain around 40-50hz, you can do an SQ tuned with 26 to 30hz to get a flatter sound.

Or tune around 36 to 40hz for some major SPL action.

kind of like playing with crossovers in a sense.

That is very interesting! Knowing your cabin gain seems like it gives you the secret variable to making a very loud or very SQ system!

I use Bass Box Pro to design all boxes. It can save money when comparing subs in required box sizes. there's a lot of cheaper subs that can give the same or better output in a given box than expensive subs. And here is my cabin gain graph

Huh maybe I should've modeled out my box on WinISD lol. My box is 2 cubic feet at 35hz with two 3" aero ports. It's too peaky for me. It's really loud at 45-50hz but after about 43hz it starts falling off. I think I used too much port area or tuned too high or both. It's only 7 square inches per cube of port area. It's for a kicker CVR 12.

What is it tuned to?

35hz. I think lol. I fucked up cutting one hole for one port so one port is sticking inside the box about half an inch more than the other. And the box isn't exactly 2 cubes but it's very close. It should be around 35.
