Second Skin products are better (have higher tolerances and higher mass/sq ft with Damplifier Pro) than Dynamat Extreme. Dynamat retail prices are ludicrous, but it's easy to get it at much lower prices (but it still ends up overpriced).
Dampening mats are not very complicated. Your main concerns with mats shouild be their heat tolerance, adhesion, and weight. Vibrations will decrease as weight is increased, so you want heavy mat. You also want mat that holds well and will not melt.
Another important thing is to understand the effects of different deadening materials. Dampening mats are used to eliminate vibration, not road noise. Acoustic foam will eliminate road noise (ie. Ensolite from Raamaudio). Acoustic foam can be either open celled or closed celled. Open celled foam generally does a better job eliminating noise, but must be treated to prevent moisture from getting inside of it. Closed cell foams like ensolite will eliminate noise well without any treatment, so they are ideal for cars. If you want to eliminate road noise, you should mat your car and add foam. If you add extra subs, you will find more rattles, and thus need more mats.
