how loud are ____ decibls?

75 is talking loud

90-95 is shouting at the top of your lungs.

120 is a .22 caliber rifle going off next to you.

140 is a 12 guage shotgun going off next to you.

150 is somewhere between mating howler monkeys and screaming crack babies

160 is your stupid self too close to a jet engine

180 is a blue whale calling to friends at the other end of the ocean, and right around the limit of how much sound we can make thanks to how thin our atmosphere is.

thats amazing how an animal can do that!

Those comparisons aren't entirely applicable to car audio, as a jet engine or blue whale are reproducing a hell of a lot more frequencies than a single-noted vehicle subwoofer system. I can guarentee 140+ dB next to a competition vehicle and 140+ dB next to a 727 are two very different experiences //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

As Jmac (and OHSA) would say, it's the dBA that does you in.

Some would say you're still there //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

No air = no pressure = no dB's //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Inside the sub? It would be the same as on the surface - the density of the medium that the wave is traveling through determines the maximum output level that can be reached. Atmospheric pressure inside the hull would (hopefully!) be very similar to the conditions topside.

Outside the hull, in the open ocean, would be a very different scenario...long wavelengths tend to propagate much more effectively through denser material. Which is why the Navy up until recently used VLF radio (100-300KHz, as opposed to 500-1710KHz for standard AM broadcast) for sub communications. Very secure, and very reliable through open water.

Considering that other whales can hear it through the water hundreds of miles away, I would say you'd be ****ed //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

hey if i was swimming next to a blue whale and it used that call hat calls across the ocean or whatever would i go deaf? or is it only loud out the water? or am i stupid?
i highly doubt u'd go deaf. i would expect that the tone that it would be emitting wouldn't be detectable to us anyway...and if it is, then i am horribly mistaken
