How important is a good engagement ring?

The right wife wont care how much it cost:fyi:
This was my first thought. The only legitimate reason for a woman wanting you to "spend more" on a ring is if she is unsure if she means enough to you that you would just buy the cheapest decent thing you could find and go with that... But if she knows you love her and means mountains to you then I'd hope she'd understand if that's the best you can do, then that's the best you can do, and that YOU'RE more important than the ring.

That said I'm going to be saving for months...

The last thing you want is a materialistic wife, if she is, you're fucked. Buying her an expensive ring does no good for you. Shes going to expect something better from then on, start small...

Agreed. That woman is not worth marrying if she straight up told you the ring wasn't big enough.

With that said if you have a lot of money sitting around, assets to get a decent ring and you completely cheaped out, that probably wasn't the smartest thing to do. Regardless the fact that she told you it wasn't good enough tells a lot about her personality. Dump the dead weight.

Back when we were dating my wife had said she wouldn't marry me unless I got her a 2 Carat ring or bigger. I laughed at her and said if she wants to marry me she'll accept whatever ring I decide to get her, even if its a cracker jack ring. Needless to say my wife and I have been married for 3 yrs. I just bought her a ring this year.

To her it is very important. To most of the men in this world it's not . Tell her we can get a big $$$ ring or we can get you a simple ring and use the extra money for ur future honey moon or a down payment on a new home. Sounds logical to me but then again sometime logic skips the females.
This.

if im not mistaken it should be (according to the way women think) it should be equivalent to 3 months salary but IMO if the woman is worried about the ring not a keeper the ring is only a symbol not a token of how much you love her. if i ever get married again there will be a prenup and it will be kinda on the ridiculous side if she agrees to it then im covered and she obviously really feels that it will last forever

I bought my wife a small engagement ring at first, then before the wedding we picked her out a nicer shinier one so she could walk down the aisle a little more ballerific like... worked out well! Then again - she really isnt materialistic, she just wanted a different ring and it was quite inexpensive so we went with it.

I dropped about $1300 on her ring. It wasnt cheap for a poor college kid. She's happy with it. She knows what it cost. I got lucky because my mom gave me her 1 k diamond from her ring. That saved me some serious cash right there. I was able to get a pretty nice band because I didn't have to worry about the diamond.

IF your marrying a woman she should know our situation and what you can and cannot afford there shouldntt be anything bad said about to ring IMO but idk i was told an engagement ring should cost 3 months pay aswell..... seems a little steep to me but w.e If i propose to my girl id give her a ring pop first to make her laugh then give her the real thing

If the woman loves you it shouldnt matter. Like was said earlier though, if you can muster some sentiment into the choice, it will go much further than a big price tag. With that said, my future wife will be getting my grandmother's engagement ring. I wouldnt have it any other way. If my grand parents could go 57 years off that ring, then maybe itl bring me some luck too. But honestly it shouldnt matter, and if it does, return it and buy some audioz. Or find a girl who would accept a moofer as a form of engagement.

The diamond my mom gave me was originally my grandmother's diamond. 50 something years for my grandparents, 26 years so far for my parents... We'll see what happens. I've been dating my fianceé for 5 years now so...yeah...if that means anything.

The reason some women may think that is because that is what de beers along with the people working on commission at the jewelry store tell them...

As far as I am concerned anyone who spends that kind of cake on a ring is fucking idiot...
