How important is a good engagement ring?

A question for both genders.

Guys, do you feel the need to go all out and spend thousands on an engagement ring to please the girl?

Ladies, does the ring or amount spend actually increase how much love you feel for your man? do you care about size of the ring? I don't think size is an issue, as long as it fits your finger, right? But my gf don't think so. The other day, I bought this diamond ring for her. Who knows, she said it not big enough.

I am not that rich guy,so weird thing....

I don't think a big, expensive ring is worth it in any way since it is nothing more than a product of capitalism and commercialism. However, with all that being said, i'll still go out and buy a big expensive ring so that the next time she complains about not going out enough i'll point to her finger and tell her "i'll take you out if you wanna pay off that ring for me"

It depends on the woman. My wife likes simple, clean looking jewelry thankfully. So her ring was really nice, but simple and not crazy expensive. Gotta know what the lady likes.

If she is wet behind the ears it's pretty important to her.. she wants you to spend the cash because she wants to know that she is 'worth it'

The reality of the situation is that spending money on jewelry is fucking retarded...

She still deserves a ring.. but I wouldn't buy one retail...

I would also ask about her commitment to the engagement stereo system... //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

dude, get the best you can afford and put a little intimacy into it. like Will smith did in Independance Day. the dolphan engagment ring. I got my woman a nice engagment ring with a heart shaped diamond. she loves it. it not to flashy and bulky. it is suttle. nice and blings in the shine. I personally hate big bulky rings. in fact I dont wear any jewlery. and she doesnt either, but after I propossed, that ring hasnt come off her fingur yet.

Do it right the first time and you won't be buying another one down the road "when you can afford it". I went big on the first ring, and am dang glad I did. It has been over a year and a half and she still talks about it, and people comment how nice it is all the time. When she gets compliments......I get lucky!!!!

To her it is very important. To most of the men in this world it's not . Tell her we can get a big $$$ ring or we can get you a simple ring and use the extra money for ur future honey moon or a down payment on a new home. Sounds logical to me but then again sometime logic skips the females.

Haha. I thought this was a great question. One thing to consider is the real chance that you will stay together. With the divorce rate being so high, how much are you willing to throw away. That said, if your not in a big hurry you should save up and buy the biggest, shiniest, flaunty, s.o.b. that you love to stare at, because you will have to look at it for a very long time. Let's face it, with women, unless you have a 9" unit, this will be the most important thing until kids come along. But you still have to stare at the ring every time you drag the kids out to eat. lol. Good luck.
