How high is your gain?

Any questioning of, or explanation of gain position based on dial position (half way. quarter of the way, etc) indicates a lack of knowledge of the proper way to adjust gains.
For example, is setting the gain in the middle (half way) the same setting on every amplifier? No.

For another example, does pages of people listing their gain position tell us ANYTHING useful? No. We dont know signal strength. We dont know userd defined maximum volume setting on the h/u. And even if we did know.... who cares? There is a proper gain position for your amplifier, given the signal strength etc. In some circumstances the proper gain position might be at 1/4 on the gain knob, or 3/4. So people listing off gain positions is pretty useless info that people could easily misinterpret as useful. Posts like this get people thinking that relative gain knob position (1/4, 1/2, etc) IS the proper way to adjust amplifier gains. This, in essence, turns them into nothing more than volume knobs for noobs. Frankly, Im disappointed its taken till page 3 for anyone to mention this.

There is no such thing as having your gain turned off. Line driver or not.
maybe you should read my original post

I read your original post. Im not being a smart *** when I ask, what do you hope to glean from finding out people's relative gain knob position? Even knowing their input voltage, this seems like totally irrelevant information to helping you adjust your gains. Again, it appears to legitimize setting your gain at 'half way' as a proper way to adjust your gains. Am I not being clear?

I wanted to confirm that my gain was too high... 4v preouts and its 3/4 up? Something isnt right. Im obviously not going to set it to 1/2 based on other people but i know something is wrong since the majority of people have it set around 1/3.

And other people's relative gain position means squat to yours, unless everyone is running the same amp as you.
Your amp's knob should give at least a minimum and maximum gain input voltage number. If not, the owner's manual will tell you min and max. From this you can get a relative idea where your knob position should be, knowing your h/u's output voltage. But that will only get you in the ballpark, even doing a simple session of setting the gains by ear would be more accurate.

i did say per DMM so they wouldnt get that idea. but point takin i see were ur coming from.

my gain is set where i wanted it to be to get the desired volume at the desired number on my HU.
Thats how I set mine, while I know this may be wrong or uncool to do, I did it that way and have yet to blow up my subs or amp, its been set this way for about 2 years, and no, I dont think me not blowing anything means I set it up the correct way, just shows that I dont abuse my stuffs in my opinion //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif
