how does a port work?

Can anyone tell me how exactly a port works? I know what it does and how it sounds, but is it all about the rear wave reacting with the front wave, or is it about pressure peaks inside the box that can only go out the ports? Because I notice that some people port thier boxes into the insides of thier cars with the subs in the trunk, etc... so it makes me wonder. Thanks.
