how do you wire up a comp. crossover

ive never run components before so i dont know. if i have a 2 way set, do i need 4 channels, one for each speaker, or does just 2 channels go to the crossover? wouldnt seem to me like that would work very well, im sure the mids have better power handling than the tweets.

im planning on running a 2 way component set along with my infinity 462.7 4x6's off my orion 8004. i've been considering selling the alpine and just getting a 3 way set with 6.5 and 4 inches, but the only 3 ways i can find are jl or pioneer.

what im looking at is the rainbow soundlines, ADS 246ix's and diamond d661's.

With passive crossovers all you need is two channels.

Some passive crossovers are bi ampable so those can take 2 or 4 channels

With an active crossover you will need 4 channels

Like already posted, the most common setup, a 2-way passive network, just uses a single channel from the power source for each crossover. The passive network then sends HP and LP freq bands to the appropriate drivers. Bi-ampable crossovers allow you to use a separate amp channel for each respective driver.

A tweeter can potentially hold just as much wattage as a mid driver provided that only the frequencies it is designed to reproduce are sent to it for reproduction. A tweeters inherent nature makes it much easier to bottom it out so you generally need to be more careful when setting crossovers/EQs and such. But so long as you're only sending it like 3.5kHz and higher in a non-clipped signal (or whatever the effective range for the tweet in question is) it should take rated RMS input with no problems.
