How do you know if a Rolex watch is real and not a fake?

my father has a rolex that he got as a gift from a businessman from japan. he also has a monte blanc pen, that retails for a few thousand he got as a gift as well. he only uses them when he sees that particular person again on his road trip

although not sure what he is doing with these "business" men to get these gifts
