how do YOU determine SQ?

well, i know i like SQ more than SPL, but i need to know, how do you guys determine a good sounding sub? i haven't heard a lot of sub companys so it's harder for me to tell.

what exactly am i looking for? i know what subs produce SQ and what are meant mainly for SPL, but what am i supposed to hear that helps me choose an SQ sub lateR?

i liked how the JL's sounded, those are the only ones we have here that you listed.

but what really is "good sound".. i know sq means sounding better, but when you guys say, "these subs sounded like a.s.s", what do you hear in it for it to sound bad?

this is kinda confusing, i'll build taste for SQ later with more experience, but i trying to learn now also

Better bass response, clear and accurate bass...once you hear the IDQ or IDMax, you will have heard some great SQ subs...the Diamonds are also great and so is everything else listed.

if i gotta answer this then you need to turn in your ears..kidding but that is about the sum of it truthfully. in sq for subs its the same as it is for other speakers. detail and realism...best thing to tell you rather than write a 30000 word essay that is meaningless is to have a referance system. what do you have at home? is it high end? if not go to your local hi end home audio store and audition thier best speakers like boston accoustics or b and w...take 3 or 4 of your favorite cds and sit down and have a listen..u should "notice" things you never did before such as strings, breathing how the drums are actually hit...alot of different things...what you are trying to achieve is the feeling/effect of live performance. some people who "claim" to be all about hifedelity (which is all about making recordings sound true to their being) meaning if the recording is a fly buzzing around the room and they record it when set up propperly in a system it should sound exactly the same. alot of these people change it to taste ..make it sound better than it actually really did.

thanks man, i didn't wanna spoil this lucious post, but i had to to show my apreciation to you.

Let's all take a minute or 2 and sit in silence as we remember the last 300 posts i've made. some serious, some stupid, some questions, but none (or a few) were pointless. i reached the 300 post mark. but a fmous JL guy (i think, there's so many of you JLXXX guys here) once said. THE NUMBER OF POSTS IS NOT IMPORTANT.

i earned this one thank you, so i'll savour the moment.

too bad my custom saying didn't fit. it was gonna be "drop bottom, without bottoming out"..... weep.

lol oh god..... just go audition some home stuff and i think you will quickly see what i/we sq guys are trying to say....there is an old saying a picture is worth a 1000 words....same can be said about sound

i always enjoyed nice sounding bass, screw pyramid and THUMP!

i also like a lil bump, but if bump doesnt sound ear pleasing, screw it. to much is to not good. my daily driving system i wouldn't want it to "BOOOOOM CRACK BUMP BOOOM".

i want " LA LA LA LA LA..... NICE SQ, SING SONG, DEE DAH DEE" and i'm happy when i'm singing with the birds in the trees and the sidewalk is glowing with molasis

Speaking of crystal i seen the death of one today someone at my work sold a crystal cmp 2x ( something like that not too familar with them) well he sent it threw our ups system and the sub came back destroyed ups must have dropped this and then ran it over with the truck the box was cracked a little but the sub was smashed the basket cracked all around and the cone was still connected to the surrounds and the ring but not the voice coil

well I haven't had the chance to listen to a lot of subs, but the worst sounding speakers I have heard are 2 L7's in a tiny hatch box in a ford with an 800 watt rf going to them at 4 ohms so they were prolly gettin like 200 apiece lol

the best system is 3 jl w0's in that premad jl box, also powered by an 800 watt rf

and not to diss on anyone, but I have never heard an L7 that I liked, I would like to hear one where the person actually knows what they're doing (ex: audiolife) lol

hopefully my setup will be the best when it's done, subs come tomorrow, I leave on vacation tomorrow and work all weekend so next week sometime
