How do you adjust your bandwidth?

the term "broadband" doesnt mean it is fast. i have seen some DSL speeds that arent much better than dial up.

your DL speeds are dependant on the sources UL speed so although you may be able to DL at 500k, if the source can only UL at 5k thats all you get

when using speedtest divide the numbers by 8 and those will be the actual max speeds you will see

when DL'ing cap your UL speed to 85% of your max(the number you got when you divided by 8) so you can get the most out of your DL speeds. bouncing off your UL cap will decrease your DL speeds

My provider just did some line work in my neighborhood a few weeks back and it made a noticable difference. My service level is 5Mbps down/640kbps up.

Used to get around 2200-2800 kb/s before.

WTF!?! I have mediacom cable internet, and we pay for 1.5..

Im in my room.. like 200ft away from the wireless router, but whats that **** all about.. doesn't seem to be running slow, and I picked the nearest 2 places on the map to make sure..

I messed around and read some instructions, and with their speed test I still was right around the same.. said I am 22% of the average speed from my local mediacom provider.. WTF.. I have a nice laptop, nice wireless router, thought nice provider, what could be the problem? Nobody else has any slow issues, although I don't really think it's slow..

WTF?!?!

Speedtest uses your connection to monitor your downstream and upstream bandwidth and see what your connection is capable of. If I connect to a host or set of hosts that can max out my downstream then I'll see the speed within +/- 5% of what the speedtest results were, assuming my ISP provides high QoS.

Where you're confused is how some programs display your transfer speed versus what speedtest is displaying as your transfer speed. They show speed in bits whereas I.E. and other apps tend to show your rates in bytes. 8 bits in 1 byte so an 8 Megabit connection could basically be capable of 8 Megabit/s transfers or 1 Megabyte/s transfers. Same thing.

yay.
