I'd suggest you set the gain with the knob turned fairly far up, then you can use the knob to attenuate (turn down) the gain whenever you want. But don't go turning it up past where you correctly set the gain.

make sure you mark where you had the knob set if you dont turn it all the way up so you know you dont clip
