How do I bypass my stock infinity amp?

So I'm pretty much a newbie on car stereos. I just bought a 97 Sebring with no speakers or head unit. I installed the head unit and bought some budget speakers for now. The head unit turns on, the harness is hooked up correctly and the speakers are hooked up correctly. I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I called the guy I bought the car from. He had aftermarket speakers and amps in the car but removed them when he sold it. He told me that my speakers are most likely not working due to the infinity amp. He said when he had his system installed they disconnected the infinity amp. However, when I looked under my seat I noticed that there were 2 cables with a bunch of wires still plugged in. I disconnected them and speakers still didn't work. There are also no RCA*? cables hooked up into my head unit. What do I have to do to get these speakers to work? Also, the speakers I installed had magnets on them that were a little to big for the hole, so I'm pretty sure the magnets are touching the metal part of the door panel a little bit. Could that cause a short?

Convertible, sedan or coupe?

Magnets touching metal will not cause a short unless wire is pinched behind it...

did you wire up the amp turn on wire?

If this is over your head maybe you should go have it installed....

Convertible. And I'm trying to make this NOT over my head if that makes any sense. All I'm looking for is to get a head unit and speakers working because that's all I'm comfortable doing right now both skill-wise and financially. If there's no way to just bypass the amp easily without rewiring or anything like that I'll end up taking it to a shop. I'm just asking if there's an easier way. I pulled out both cables going into the amp and have both the blue wires in the harness (for the amp) disconnected. I'm wondering if the amp is esential to the speakers working, like it maybe completes the circuit?

Well, I might be screwed. I just looked up the wiring diagrams for my car and it doesn't seem to match what I'm looking at. Besides...the guy pulled his system out before he sold me the car. I would think he would have left the harness for me if it was the stock wiring. The harness DID fit right onto the stock connectors though. I'm not sure what to do..I'll take a better look at it tomorrow.
