how can i test these?

i am going to check out a few used ceiling mount screens/flipdowns. How can i test them to make sure they have power going to them? Can i Use the power directly off a car battery and run 12v constatnt to the + and the ground to the -?

That is the way I would do it. I did that on my last screen I sold.
