htf do you guys have so much stuff? lol, i have a 30g hard drive and i have 20 gig free... the server at work for an accounting firm isn't even a TB and some of you have more...
server info doesn't have to take up a lot of space. Databases can be big, but "big" is a relative term to what you're talking about. A "big" database of contacts is just text, which doesn't scale that large, even if you have several thousand contacts.
Several thousand MP3s, on the other hand, at anywhere from 3-10 megs a piece (or more, depending on the encoding and/or filetype) is exponentially larger than the database would be. The other thing that takes up space is games. You dl a game off DC++ at anywhere from half a gig for older games to 3-4 gigs for newer games. Then you install the game, which inflates to at least 1.5 times the size of the dowload file. Now you're throwing away space like you have it.
I have 2 drives, but I have them partitioned as follows:
C: 5gigs - holds nothing but the operating system
D: Downloads (10g) - anything Dled from the net that is small. Shareware, patches, even some audio or vid files that I dl from the net stay there temporarily
F: Files (10g) - bound to "My Documents" folder. I keep all pictures, texts, web site projects in there... along w/a few mp3s of stuff that I've put together
G: Games(40g)
P: Apps (20g)
M: Media (30g) - movies, mp3s
Q: Extra Archiving (30g) - stuff that main archiving doesn't handle + ****. Also used to back up my docs an desktop
R: Main Archiving (30g) holds ISOs (app/game install files) as well as updates and/or patches
S: Paging file (2g) - completely dedicated partition for a 2g paging file
X: Desktop (5g) - bound to my desktop folder.
I think there's a bit of extra space in there, plus space taken up by formatting.. but that's about it.
