Horns *pics*

Not as much as you'd think.

A pair of these:

sold on Audiogon, with drivers, for $300.

But of course, there are horns in the 100-104dB range that do sell for $500 and above with no speakers, so it's all relative //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'm curious that you got good results with it, because at least looking at the specs of the FR125, it seems better suited for a mass loaded TL or Voight Pipe than horn loading. But those are some excellent results //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

The bearing on one the router bits froze up and pretty much ruined the other enclosure. Like the performance enough to build one over again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

do they have horns in the 108-110dB range? I have a full workshop (including a lathe to work with) and my uncle owns a CNC company. I wouldnt be buying one, this would be a project.

http://www.passdiy.com would be the place to go, I think the Kleinhorn is around that.

The highest efficiency commercially-built horn I know of is the Klipsch La Scala, @ 104dB/W. 110dB/W is possible, but you need a ton of room, not just because the cabinets are huge but also because you a lot of room between you and the speakers. Otherwise, amplified hum can drive you nuts //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

How much of an increase of the low-end would I see? Is it possible to build bookshelf horns with at least 100dB efficiency?
Sure, if your bookshelf could fit in the Library of Congress //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Horns take space, no way around it...besides, a bookshelf is about the worst place you could mount a speaker. Kills room gain.

The easiest (from a construction, not finance standpoint) is going with a line array...but once you start to increase driver cost, things get substantially more expensive that way. Hence thylantyr's work with really cheap drivers.

jez that looks like my intestinal track

they wouldnt be placed in a bookshelf...theyd be placed on my desk or next to my tv. I would like to build some 4 foot HT horns and some ~2 foot Horns for a computer setup.

Would I see a large increase in low-end output with the horn design (thats what is most desirable to me)?

Horns that small are possible (see the Japanese ones I posted a pic of)...but generally, you get better performance as mouth size and compression chamber size gets more optimal (read: huge).

You would see a big increase in low end, that's part of the allure of horn loading //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Jack or Inhuman, would it be possible if I could get a copy of those plans (of the pics you posted w/ the crazy horns) I'm pretty sure I might be albe to wrangle some cheap CNC time, possibly free.

*edit* and what driver those are made for also...

Those 125's are a little to expensive for my tastes.

Have you heard anything about the FE103E's?

I really want to make a horn, and the plans for them look pretty good, tuned to 50hz, so it goes low enough I can use my RE 12" for a sub.

Any ideas on this project?

The only problem is all dimensions are in metric......//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/mad.gif.c18f003ab0ef8a0d9c27ca78d77a6392.gif
