War Eagle!!!
im good with computers, but for some reason ive been through hell and back trying to get a network going with my vista laptop and xp desktop

laptop is wireless, desktop is wired to the router, ive gotten it one time and never again since then

ive tried all i know how to do

anyone got any word of advice or programs that would help?

is there any way to use a ftp client to do it?not sure how much of those work

What exactly are you trying to do? Get the laptop on the internet without wireless router?

EDIT: NVM I think I know what you are wanting to do. You want to transfer files between each other? I never could get it to work right wirelessly. I used a crossover cable and hooked two computers up.

So, you have a wireless router, a wireless-enabled laptop, and a desktop hooked to the router via Ethernet cable?

And you are having trouble getting the laptop to connect to the network?

Or, are you having trouble sharing files?

Make sure that both computers are listed under the same workgroup name. Also, check your Network setting to make sure File and Printer Sharing is enabled.

i believe they are both under home workgroup

ill check and make sure, vista's firewalls are turned off , im using kaspersky internet security, ive even turned it off and tried

im about to reformat the desktop, just trying to put all the music and stuff on my lptop

no one has asked what type of router he is using??? I know that some of the lower end NetGear and Belkin units do NOT allow file sharing. Please provide a model number... also make sure that the router setting has the MAC ID for BOTH the desktop and the laptop AND the wireless card Mac ID.

go to your dos propmpt and type in IPCONFIG/ALL on each p/c you are trying to hook up and write down the MAC ID...then enter those numbers in the routers wireless setup screen.

On my friends vista pc(he got it the week vista came out) we had to change the ip from dhcp to static so that they where on the same network. example- PC:198.168.1.2 Laptop: 198.168.1.3 . It was weird but it worked to transfer files at least.

i had similar problems when i upgraded to windows media player 10 w/ the media connect software included. couldnt stream any of my music or videos. downgraded then reinstalled windows media connection
