Home Audio Vs. Car Audio... A discussion

IMO, speakers are speakers. You can seal them, vent them, or you can have them free-air. The specs vary from all car audio drivers just like how different home audio drivers would vary.

no diff to me, especially when some of the best car audio speakers are made from Home audio companies.

Well, I mean my question is more so why is there a difference in terms of RMS ratings between car and home mid-ranges. Is it because most car speakers are less sensitive, or is it because you really do need louder speakers in cars due to the harsher environments?

There is generally a difference between car and home audio speakers. Namely, the cones and surrounds. Car audio speakers tend to be built more durable: thicker cones than home audio, using poly cones and things home audio would generally cringe at, etc. Surrounds tend to be made of different mat'ls meant to better withstand sunlight and severe temp changes. These heavier designs mean more mass, less efficiency.

Home audio subs tend to be designed to play deeper (lower fs) because home audio doesn't get the low-end transfer function we enjoy in car audio.

That makes sense. Thanks for explaining it, audioholic.
