I currently have a 42" Samsung Plasma, Onkyo SR-304, JBL N-Center II Center Speaker, and some crap sony cubes.

I assume DIY is the cheapest route, but I want something that is going to sound VERY good, for the best possible price. If that means DIY, that is fine. I have the materials to do it with.

My build will be in VERY slow stages, possibly only 1 speaker at a time slow....ha ha

I have a budget of $1500 for the completed project......which will be over several months.

Looking to do a movie setup with LITTLE musical use. I listen to EVERY genre of music.

Would like a nice SQ setup rather than volume as I know I will be renting for a while.

Ive never built my own home set-up but ive ran vega's my whole life. Currently i run four 12's with a yamaha 1000w receiver. A polk audio 10 inch powered sub with a technics 110 disk cd changer. I think it came out to around 1500-2000, that was years ago so im not 100% sure on that. If you decide to go that route that is.

Focus, do not take anything a person with audiobahn car audio subs and 4 CV speakers playing in stereo has to say seriously.

20 x 14, but seeing is that I know I will be renting for the next 2-3 years, that could change yearly.

Aight then. Since it isn't exactly appropriate to ask what movies you'll expect to watch, what sort of music do you listen to most?

I guess I should also preface that by saying that there is nos uch thing as an ideal or perfect loudspeaker. Each speaker system should have goals. Studio monitors are made to reproduce with the best sound quality which is a non subjective parameter that means how closely the speakers reproduce the input signal. They don't sound good unless you're mixing because you obviously wouldn't want to listen to some guy singing in the sound booth, you want to hear him after it's been mixed. By knowing what sort of music, it's easier to tell what kinda drivers to use.

Reggae, hip hop, and old school rock are pretty much the majority.
