i love mkII's to death, man
if i could afford one, i'd have one
but as for a thrifty car, they don't really fit the bill.
people dump them cheap for the exact reasons i explained, you'll see ones in good condition going for 6-10k still. They're THE original tuner car, and they still have a huge cult following.
And the price of maintanence is a recent thing. VW stopped making most of the parts, so the only things left are new-old stock, and aftermarket. In their hayday, they were so popular because they were cheap to maintain.
as long as cars like this keep being built, the demand and price of ownership are gonna stay outrageous for everyone else, unfortunately.
