high tune for metal?

do a sub like you normally do a sub.

get some better midbass!!!

cmon bacon, you should know better //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Tuning: correct me if I'm wrong Squeak but the higher you tune the more of a bump or hump it gives to the freq response, more db's at a certain range but on the other end you are losing low end output below tuning. So the only reason somebody would tune high is for SPL comps or to try and get more output within a certain freq range. My feeling is if the output is not enough with you box tuned to a lower freq 28 hz or so then you need a bigger sub or additional subs. I feel that higher tuning is a way to cheat the system to get extra output but at a cost.

higher tuning results in a loss of output below Fb (tuning frequency), however, about an octave ABOVE the tuning frequency in a regular ported box, there is usually a nice little peak in output.

the higher you tune, the eaiser it is to get loud, so tuning higher is eaiser to score than tuning low.

problem is, subwoofers playing music will most likely sound like dogpoo rolling down a mountain of dead .. things, because they are USUALLY designed to play lower notes. tuning high does not help.

so tuning high is 99% of the time, for more output at a given frequency - this is why SPL guys tune high.

if that made any sense at all. im quite tired //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

Dont mean to hijack thread, but...

I listen to exclusively rap

According to you guys, you only tune high for spl and comps, but this is a daily driver... So does it relaly matter what type of music I listen to? Shouldnt all boxes be tuned low?

Anyway, since I listen to all bass heavy rap, what do you suggest?

I was thinking like 32 hz, but some people said that might be too low

Yes I think that all boxes should be tuned low (27-34) for daily drivers and like I said earlier if you want it louder get bigger better or more subs but don't sacrifice you freq response for a couple db's.

Just going to be really peaky, inaccurate kick drums. Can't imagine why you'd want that.

For nearly any woofer, sealed is vastly superior to vented for overall accuracy, and despite common misconceptions to the contrary, sealed has vastly more accurate low frequency output and extension as well.

It is a rather elementary task to get a sealed box system to play flat to below 20Hz in a car, and with vented boxes you trade extension for excessive peak output in the 30-40Hz region in most cases.

For musical purposes, you simply cannot beat sealed for accuracy, period.

So what would I gain from going from a sealed box to say a ported box tuned to 34 hz?
