high pitched sound

I installed my new box today and it went pretty well. I was hooking up with subs to my amp and accidentally hit the positive side while screwing in the negative side. The amp still sounds good with no problems (that I have noticed)

On the other hand, the other amp I have pushing the fronts and mids have this high pitched whine. The sounds occurs whether the car is on or off. It also makes a really loud popping sound when switching sources and turning car on/off.

Any ideas?

After further investigation I have discovered the problem is alternator whine.

How come a problem with one amp would cause a problem with another amp if the aren't connected?

Alternator whine cannot occur if the vehicle is not running. I would guess you are experiencing a ground loop or faulty component in one of the amps due to the problem.

Does the fact that I hit the + on the subs and it made a spark have anything to do with. It has an alternator whine as well.

The sub amp also has thumps when moving from "0" to "1".

I suppose both amps are now in need of repair. I guess that's what I get for hooking up subs while car is on.

My friend (who was there) said that the reason that both amps are jacked up is because "I grounded the subs through the casing which sent negative power to the car through the ground. This went through the ground of the other amp and jacked it up too" Why wouldn't the whole care have a problem then?

hmm. interesting theory. i disagree. try disconnecting the sub amp to see if the noise goes away.

BTW, the speaker amp isn't getting extremely hot right? i know from experience that unstable amps can make annoying sounds and get very hot very fast... though this was an amp i built and not a commercially bought one.

Pioneer HU

sounds like another DOA Pioneer,internal ground short

which could mean you need a new HU or warrenty service

it happend to me...that was my last pioneer product illever buy

has to do with removing or installing RCA wires with the power still on the car

you cant even touch a pioneer HU with it powered up/batt on car still connected

Instead of shorting the amps, you belive it shorted the pre-out part on my head unit? That's easy to look and try to fix.

The other suggestion did not work. I turned the amp off using non-fade and the sound still exists.

We tried hooking up my RCAs to my friends amp and it still had the "turn on thump" but no problem with the whine. Now, we believe there is some problem with the RCAs from the headunit.

Next, we moved the ground in my car and it still produces a whine. I also noticed that the whine is nearly inaudible at normal listening volume, just very noticable when paused.

One thing I dont understand is that when I moved the ground the subs would move as if they were turning on.

Why would this just start if it a ground loop problem? Also, would ground loop isloators help my problem.

ground the RCA's. That fixed the problem with my HU.
