high end component suggestions

I am thinking about putting a new system into my car in the near future and I'm having trouble picking out components. I am looking for a high end set of components, but one that will drop into my stock locations. I have a 1990 325 so the stock locations are down in the kickpanels and I have tweeter pods in the A frame corner. I made some fiberglass kickpanels for my RE RE's but I don't really want to do that again because I am unhappy with the space they take up. Basically I am looking for a 5.25" component set that will pretty much drop right in. Looking to spend around $500-700.

No such thing as drop right in and high end sound. You could spend a lot of money on components, but modifying the stock location to mount a more cost effective set will yield better sound. Of course doing both will really be the way to go. You can fit 6.5"s with very minimal cutting and modifying, which is what I would recommend. If you are stuck on the 5.25 I'd probably use a Scanspeak Revelator and a tweeter of your choice and run active.

I know, i'm just looking for something that doesnt require being aimed at the driver and whatnot. I will look into cutting the hole for 6.5's though, never really thought about doing that.

edit: i plan on running JL 10W7's and Slash amps for this system. i wonder if i should just go with zr's, or maybe the xr's would even fit my application better.

I would say go with what he said by making the 5.25 into a 6.5 driver. Much more sound. As far as high end sets there are a lot to choose from like Morel, Rainbow, CDT, Vifa...what type of sound are you aiming for? Music selections?

I listen to almost all hip hop.

Also, I think I may end up fiberglassing enclosures for the mids again, except onto the doorpanels instead of down in the kickpanels.

so what do you want from your system? strong midbass, clarity, blah blah blah....

there are A LOT of choices to choose from and almost all of the decent stuff can play hip hop stuff pretty well... please tell us what type of sound you are looking for.

strong mids are always good. i like clean highs for all the snares and claps and whatnot in hiphop, but not too harsh to where im blinking everytime a snare hits. i dont think i would want to go a whole lot more crisp than the RE RE tweeters i have now, which are silk dome, but i think i remember hearing that they are quite harsh for silk dome tweeters?

ok, so are you open to active setups? if not, for your application, i would maybe look into the rainbow cmx, or CDT euro, or jbl 6.5 gti, kicker ss65.2 etc...

i would make a 3way setup. Use the kicks to house a smaller size speaker like a 4in use the doors to hold your 5.25 or a 6.5 if possible and mount the tweet wherever. CDT HD-52 are a good 5.25 component set. But if you can do a 3way get the HD-4 or ES-4, M6 midbass and drt-26 tweeter. Pm me if interested.

i dont think i want to go with an active or 3-way set. the cdt euro's were one of the sets i was looking into.

would the image dynamics chameleons work well for my application? i know they are as high end as some of the others mentioned, but i think they may fit the bill..

many of the guys on the bimmer forum have modified their stock e30 kicks to fit larger speakers-

i woudl highly recommend taking them apart and stiffening the back side of them with some fiberglass/modifying them to fit what you need- i haven't done that to your exact model, but i've done similar processes on many german cars this year.
