Because they don't understand what an infinite regress is.

I have seen this term used a couple times. In the context of the conversation (vs. wikipedia), what does it mean? Not trying to be combative here, just curious.

In simple terms, that there is no end to the line of questioning.

Everything must have a creator, therefore god created the universe.

But if everything must have a creator, who created god?

And since everything must have a creator, who created the god who created god?

And since everything must have a creator, who created the god who created the god who created god?

We could infinitely regress (go backward infinitely) and never arrive at an answer. Since everything must have a creator, there would always be another creator in the sequence.

anyways, i have to play devil's advocate here, and agree when quote unquote evolutionists say "read a book". really? why don't u explain it to these "other" people who are sooo unenlightened, instead of wasting your time saying that? like you've ever read a book. books are books. they're outdated, and there is this new thing, called ca.com, where you can learn everything, and it's easier than reading a book. so, since you know everything about evolution, the origins of life, and how there is no debate about any of this, why don't u just explain it to everyone on earth, and nobody will ever argue about it ever again, and everyone will get along. i'll hold my breath

This idea, to me, is really not that objectionable. It is a god who created the universe with all it's physical laws and just permitted it to exist. There's no divine plan, no miracles, no worship, not even any judgement. In this sense, it does not conflict with what we are learning about the universe, but it also might explain a seemingly unanswerable problem.

Now with that said, I don't believe that this is the case. It still does not jive philosophically and there is no real evidence to support it. Just because I don't know doesn't mean I'm going to answer with "It must have been god." Or for that matter, "It must have been gods".
