My point was essentially that only in dogmatic religion has it been identified that god requires belief; I think to say that there is a potential for a "pay-out" by being religious is a bad assumption, just as bad as assuming that a god who exists (a la the Deist view) will punish non-believers rather than reward inquisitive thought.
A simple supposition: If I were to meet god, I would feel quite comfortable explaining the lack of evidence, and I think the god we typically think of (omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent) would be understanding of that, whereas meeting god as a bet-hedger would probably not work out for you. Regardless, this is simple conjecture with no evidence that I'm using only as an exercise of the mind.
