The hedger is using the Christian premise that belief is key to the payoff.  I could very well be wrong in my underlying assumption in that God is apathetic to why someone believes, just that he does. There are logical steps to the bet hedger based on that premise. While it is not scientific inquiry, there is reasoning behind the belief. With that said, I readily admit the first step to belief requires some irrationality.</blockquote>
